Judges and Pronouncers (for all bees)

  • The Pronouncers and Judges are responsible for knowing the rules and procedures as outlined on this website.
  • The Pronouncer(s) is(are) responsible for pronouncing and defining words, and using words in a sentence at the speller's request.
  • The Judges are responsible for making sure each speller understands the pronouncer and correctly pronounces the word for the judges. The judges determine whether the contestant has spelled the word correctly.
  • The Judges are responsible for handling all appeals. Appeals must be handled at the end of each round until there are only five spellers, when the appeal must be handled immediately. See Rules for Local Spelling Bees for details.
  • The Judges are in complete control of the contest. Their decisions shall be final on all questions.
