Summer

The Birmingham News selects students entering their junior or senior years in college to work each summer in paid reporting and editing internships.

Applicants should have completed substantial coursework in journalism, worked for campus or other publications and maintained a B average or above.

The internships emphasize practical experience. The intern is expected to perform as a beginning journalist and benefits from experienced teaching editors and special coaching programs.

Internships customarily run for 12 weeks. Applicants may send a cover letter, resume and clips by Dec. 1 to:

Year-Round

The Birmingham News has four-month internships in sports throughout the year. Applicants should have completed substantial coursework in journalism, worked for campus or other publications and maintained a B average or above. The internships emphasize practical experience, and the intern is expected to perform as a beginning reporter. Deadline for application is April 1. The newspaper also offers six-month internships in photography. Deadline is March 15 for the internship beginning July 1 and Oct. 15 for the internship beginning Jan. 1. Applicants may send a cover letter, resume and clips to:

Founded in 1888, The Birmingham News is the largest daily newspaper in Alabama. News staff members have won two Pulitzer Prizes, in 2007 for investigative reporting and in 1991 for editorial writing. The newspaper was a Pulitzer finalist in 2006 and in 1994 for editorial writing. News journalists also have won the Society of Professional Journalists’ Green Eyeshade Award, an Award of Excellence from the International Society for News Design, a first place award in the Pictures of the Year International Competition, several Top 10 awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors as well as numerous state and regional journalism honors.

Birmingham, a metropolitan area of 1 million in central Alabama, is a center for health care and finance. The city's largest employer is theUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham, an urban university with a nationally recognized medical school. In addition to UAB, the area is home to Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College, Samford University and the University of Montevallo. Attractions include the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, Barber Motor Sports Park, the Birmingham Barons AA baseball team and music venues that host many top touring shows.
