About the NIE Program

The Birmingham News Newspaper in Education (NIE) program is dedicated to enhancing the academic program in our community by providing educators with materials to assist in teaching all curriculum areas.

What does NIE provide?
  • Classroom copies of The Birmingham News
  • Teacher programs, workshops, and demonstration classes
  • Materials that schools lack which are aligned with Alabama Course of Study Objectives as set by the Alabama Department of Education
  • Academic contests throughout the year
How do schools benefit from NIE?
  • Schools receive classroom sets of The Birmingham News and teaching materials at greatly reduced costs through generous corporate sponsors
  • Teachers have access to timely content from the newspaper to use in all areas of their instructional programs
  • Teachers enhance their education and earn Continuing Education Units through instructor programs and workshops
  • Students learn to read critically and effectively, enhance math skills for daily living, become involved in public issues, and develop life skills for positive growth
  • Students gain a better understanding of our world community
It is the goal of NIE to develop and present methods of teaching with The Birmingham News to create an entertaining and motivational learning environment. Through instructor support, newsletters, and curriculum guides, The Birmingham News and participating sponsors are committed to meeting the needs of area teachers as they work to develop tomorrow's leaders.
