A newspaper has a fundamental responsibility to the city it serves: to report the news with integrity, honesty and conviction. At The Birmingham News, we believe it’s our responsibility not only to keep our citizenry informed, but also to chronicle the narrative story that is our town. We are the daily expression of that story: the only place shared by the powerful, the downtrodden and all of us in between. And for those of us who tell it every day, it’s not just a job, it’s a privilege.

If we hold true to our responsibility of telling the narrative story of all Birmingham, then there’s only one way for us to do it: thoroughly. Every headline, every story and every photograph comes together as the result of hundreds of things that happen in the background here every single day. Things like skipped lunches, tight deadlines, tough questions, parking tickets and note pads filled to the edges. That’s because, around here, we believe that going the extra mile matters. It’s what sets us apart and explains why we are still the largest news gathering organization in Alabama. It’s also what makes it possible for us to tell the stories that affect us all.
